MR Cholangiography (Bile Duct MRI)
Magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRCP) is a non-invasive imaging technique used to visualize the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts using MRI technology.
The examination helps detect bile duct stones, inflammatory conditions, tumors, and other abnormalities of the biliary system.
Indications
Suspected gallstone disease
MRCP allows detection of stones in the bile ducts or gallbladder.
Right upper abdominal pain
The method helps determine whether symptoms are related to biliary obstruction.
Inflammatory diseases
MRI can help diagnose cholangitis, cholecystitis, and other inflammatory conditions.
Suspected tumors
The examination may reveal tumors of the bile ducts or surrounding organs.
Unexplained jaundice
MRCP is commonly used to identify the cause of bile duct obstruction.
Post-treatment follow-up
The study may be used to monitor the condition after surgery or treatment.

Why MRCP is often combined with abdominal MRI
- better visualization of the biliary anatomy;
- evaluation of nearby organs such as the liver and pancreas;
- improved diagnostic accuracy.
MR cholangiography is an important diagnostic tool for evaluating diseases of the biliary system.
